Father of endoscopy is considered Philipp Bozzini (Germany, 1805). His invention, the Lichtleiter, illuminated and visualized internal cavities for the first time.

Limitations of the Lichtleiter

Limitation: The Lichtleiter used candlelight reflected by mirrors, giving poor illumination, a fire hazard, and no proper optics to visualize deep cavities.

19th Century Illumination

In the 19th century, the miniature electric bulb enabled internal illumination, allowing self-contained endoscopes and safer visualization of internal organs.

First Clinical Gastroscopy

First clinical gastroscopy: Adolf Kussmaul (1868) performed it on a sword swallower, whose tolerance to rigid tubes made the procedure possible.

Drawbacks of Early Rigid Endoscopes

Drawbacks of early rigid endoscopes included pain, unsafe use, and limited visualization due to rigidity, poor lighting, and lack of suction/irrigation.

Max Nitze improved Bozzini's design in 1877 with a cystoscope featuring lens optics and an internal electric bulb, greatly enhancing visibility.
