María, from Colombia, has just started a new job in London. On her first day, she greets her British colleague with a kiss on the cheek, as she normally would back home. The colleague looks surprised and steps back awkwardly.



Discuss the situation by thinking about the following questions:


  • What do you think went wrong here?
  • How do you think people usually greet each other in countries like the UK?
  • How might this situation feel different in Colombia?

Too Much Small Talk

Tom, a British man, is visiting one of his company’s office bracnhes in New York. Before a meeting, he tries to make small talk about the weather and his flight. The Americans seem impatient and want to “get straight to business.” Tom feels they’re being rude.
