Introduction to the Simple Present

The simple present expresses daily actions, facts, and habits. It uses the base verb for most subjects and an -s ending for he, she, it.

Form and Structure

Form: subject + base verb (+ -s for he/she/it). Examples: I walk. He walks. They walk.

Positive Statements

Positive examples: I walk to work. She reads a book. Birds fly. The sun rises in the east. These show routine or facts.

Negatives

Negative form: do not (don't) + base verb, or does not (doesn't) + base verb. Example: I do not walk on Sundays.

Questions

Questions use do or does. Do you walk to work? Does she walk to work? When do they usually walk?

Usage: Routines

Use the simple present for routines and habits: She brushes her teeth, they study English every morning, we eat dinner together.

Adverbs of Frequency

Adverbs of frequency often accompany the tense: always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely, never. Example: He always arrives early.

Third-Person Spelling

Spelling rules: -y to -ies (copy → copies). Verbs ending in -o, -ch, -sh, -ss, -x add -es (goes, watches).

Common Irregulars

Key irregulars: have/has, do/does, go/goes, make/makes. I/you/we/they have, he/she/it has.
