Introducción a los diptongos

Un diptongo es la unión de dos vocales en una misma sílaba. Generalmente combina una vocal fuerte (a, e, o) con una vocal débil (i, u) o dos vocales débiles.

Qué es un diptongo

El diptongo se forma cuando dos vocales se pronuncian en una sola emisión de voz. No siempre son fáciles de dividir en sílabas, dependiendo del acento y la intensidad.

Composición típica

Las combinaciones más comunes son: débil + fuerte, fuerte + débil, y débil + débil. En todos estos casos, las dos vocales se agrupan en una única sílaba.

Diptongos ascendentes

En los diptongos ascendentes, una vocal débil precede a una vocal fuerte, como en tú-lido o fi-stea.

Diptongos descendentes

En los descendentes, la vocal fuerte va primero y la débil después, por ejemplo en peine o causa.

Diptongos con dos vocales débiles

Cuando aparecen dos vocales débiles, como ai o au, se forma un diptongo siempre que no haya tilde que rompa la secuencia.

Ejemplos comunes

Ejemplos: cua-do, tarea, ciudad. Observa cómo las dos vocales se pronuncian en una misma sílaba.

Regla de acentuación

Los diptongos pueden llevar tilde sólo si la palabra requiere acentuación. Si la tilde recae sobre la vocal débil, puede dividirse en dos sílabas, formando hiato.

Diptongos y hiatos

Cuando una vocal débil lleva tilde y rompe la secuencia, se crea un hiato: paí-so o ma-íz. Este es un caso especial frente a los diptongos.
