En inglés, el tiempo pasado más usado es el Past Simple, que sirve para hablar de acciones terminadas en un momento específico del pasado.


1. Formación

Verbos regulares: se forman añadiendo -ed

work → worked, play → played

Verbos irregulares: cambian por completo y deben memorizarse

go → went, eat → ate, see → saw


2. Uso principal

El Past Simple se usa para:

Acciones completadas:

I visited London last year.

(Visité Londres el año pasado.)

Secuencias de acciones:

He entered, sat down, and started to read.

(Entró, se sentó y empezó a leer.)

Momentos específicos en el pasado:

She called me at 8 pm.

(Ella me llamó a las 8 p. m.)


3. Estructura

En inglés, el Past Simple tiene tres formas principales: afirmativa, negativa e interrogativa. Cada una sigue una estructura específica que es importante memorizar.


Afirmativa:

En las oraciones afirmativas, simplemente usamos el verbo en pasado. Para verbos regulares, este pasado se forma con -ed (walk → walked), mientras que los verbos irregulares tienen una forma propia (go → went).


Subject + verb (past form)

She walked to school.

(Ella caminó a la escuela.)


Negativa:

Para negar una acción en el pasado, no usamos el verbo en pasado. En cambio, utilizamos el auxiliar did not (didn’t), que ya está en pasado, y por eso el verbo principal se queda en su forma base (infinitivo sin “to”).


Subject + did not (didn't) + verb base

They didn’t watch TV.

(Ellos no vieron televisión.)


Interrogativa:

Para hacer preguntas en el Past Simple, también usamos el auxiliar did, pero esta vez al inicio de la oración. Al igual que en la forma negativa, el verbo principal permanece en su forma base.


Did + subject + verb base

Did you finish the homework?

(¿Terminaste la tarea?)
