Introduction to Nouns

Nouns are words that name people, places, things, or ideas. They come in several types, each with its own rules and examples.

2

Common vs Proper Nouns

Common nouns name general items (city, country, month). Proper nouns name specific items and are capitalized (Paris, January, Everest).

3

Common Nouns

A common noun refers to a general item: city, dog, book. It is not capitalized unless it starts a sentence.

4

Proper Nouns

A proper noun names a specific item: New York, Rover, Harry Potter. They are unique and always capitalized.

5

Concrete Nouns

Concrete nouns can be perceived by the senses. Examples: flower, rain, chocolate.

6

Abstract Nouns

Abstract nouns express ideas or qualities that cannot be sensed directly. Examples: freedom, intelligence, happiness.

7

Countable Nouns

Countable nouns can be counted. Examples: apple, idea, chair (singular or plural).

8

Uncountable (Mass) Nouns

Uncountable nouns cannot be counted individually. Examples: water, sand, music (used with much/more).

9

Collective Nouns

Collective nouns refer to a group: team, committee, flock. They can take singular or plural verbs depending on context.

10

Material Nouns

Material nouns denote substances used to make things: wood, iron, plastic. They describe matter rather than items.
