Introduction to Telling Time

Time helps us organize our day. We read clocks to know when to start tasks, meals, and play. Today we practice telling time in English.

Reading an Analog Clock: Hours

An analog clock has two hands. The longer hand shows minutes, the shorter shows hours. Read the number the short hand points to for the hour.

Minutes on the Clock

The minute hand points to 0 after each hour. It moves in increments of 5 minutes per number. Count by fives to read minutes quickly.

O'Clock

When the minute hand points to 12, we say it is o'clock. Example: 3:00 is three o'clock.

Reading Half, Quarter

Use half past to describe 30 minutes after the hour. Quarter past is 15 minutes after, and quarter to is 15 minutes before the next hour.

AM and PM

We divide the day into AM (midnight to noon) and PM (noon to midnight). Practice saying times with both parts.

Daily Routine Times

Share your routine: wake up at 7:00, breakfast at 7:30, school at 8:15. Practice stating each time in English.

Expressing Time Intervals

We describe durations with past and to. Example: ten past eight means 8:10; twenty to nine means 8:40.

Look at the clock and answer: What time is it? When is it ten minutes to eleven? How do you say 8:25 in words?
