Meet the Ear

The ear helps us hear and stay balanced. It has three parts: the outer ear, the middle ear, and the inner ear.

Outer Ear

The outer ear catches sound. It has a pinna (the part you see on the side of your head) and the ear canal guiding sounds inward.

Ear Canal

The ear canal is a tube that channels sound waves from the ear opening to the eardrum. It also protects the ear with wax.

Eardrum

The eardrum is a small, thin drum inside the ear. When sound waves reach it, it vibrates gently, helping the ear hear.

Middle Ear

The middle ear sits behind the eardrum. It fills with air and helps move sound into the inner ear.

Hammer (Malleus)

The hammer bone, called the malleus, starts the chain of tiny bones. It passes vibrations from the eardrum to the next bone.

Anvil (Incus)

The anvil bone, or incus, sits between the hammer and stirrup. It helps transfer vibrations smoothly.

Stirrup (Stapes)

The stirrup bone, or stapes, is the smallest bone. It taps the inner ear so sound becomes a nerve signal.

Inner Ear: Cochlea

The inner ear contains the cochlea, which looks like a snail. It changes vibrations into electrical signals that travel to the brain.

Auditory Nerve

The auditory nerve carries signals from the inner ear to the brain. Tiny balance organs also help us feel steady when we move.
