Understanding Acceleration

Acceleration is the rate at which an object's velocity changes over time, meaning it can speed up, slow down (deceleration), or change direction, even at a constant speed, because velocity includes both speed and direction. It's a vector quantity, having both magnitude and direction, and is calculated as the change in velocity divided by the change in time

Positive acceleration means velocity increases over time (speeding up), while negative acceleration, also known as deceleration, means velocity decreases (slowing down)

Three Ways To Accelerate

  • Speeding Up: Positive acceleration (velocity and acceleration vectors point the same way).
  • Slowing Down: Negative acceleration or deceleration (velocity and acceleration vectors point opposite ways).
  • Changing Direction: Even if speed is constant, changing direction means velocity changes, thus it's acceleration (e.g., a car in a circle).
