What is Aluminium?

Aluminium is a lightweight, silvery-white metal. It is the third most abundant element in the Earth’s crust and widely used in everyday products.

Although abundant in rocks, aluminium is not found free in nature. It exists mainly as compounds like bauxite, which must be processed to extract the metal.

Extraction Process

Extraction starts with bauxite mining, then refining to produce alumina. The crucial step is the Hall-Héroult process to obtain metallic aluminium from alumina.

Hall-Héroult Process

In this electrolytic method, molten alumina is reduced to form aluminium metal at the cathode, while oxygen forms on the anode. It’s energy-intensive but essential.
