The First World War, fought from 1914 to 1918, reshaped global politics, borders, and societies through unprecedented military conflict and social change.

Weak alliances, rising nationalism, imperial ambitions, militarism, and a spark from the assassin’s event set the war in motion across continents.

The Spark: Sarajevo 1914

The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand triggered a domino of mobilizations, treaties, and declarations of war across Europe within weeks.

The Alliance System

Two major blocs emerged: the Allies, including Britain and France, and the Central Powers, led by Germany and Austria-Hungary.

Major Allied Powers

Key members included Britain, France, Russia, Italy (later), and the United States, joined by many colonial and dominion forces.

Principal members were Germany, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire, and Bulgaria, opposing the Allied coalition on multiple fronts.
