Welcome to forming triangles. Today we explore how lines connect to make three-sided figures, and how sides and angles work together.

What is a Triangle?

A triangle is a polygon with three sides and three angles. The three sides meet at three vertices to form a closed shape.

Sides and Angles

Triangles have three sides and three interior angles. The sum of the interior angles is always 180 degrees.

Types by Sides

By side lengths: Equilateral (all sides equal), Isosceles (two sides equal), and Scalene (no equal sides).

Types by Angles

By angles: Acute (all angles < 90°), Right (one angle = 90°), and Obtuse (one angle > 90°).

Triangle Inequality

For any triangle, the sum of any two sides must be greater than the third side. This ensures a real triangle forms.

Constructing Triangles

Using a ruler to draw sides and a compass to mark equal lengths helps form precise triangles.

Perimeter Basics

The perimeter is the total length of all three sides. Add sides together to find the distance around the triangle.

Angles Sum Practice

In any triangle, if you know two angles, you can find the third angle by using 180° minus the sum of the known angles.
