What is the DofE?

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award, or DofE, is a UK youth programme helping 14-24 year-olds reach their potential.

A brief history

Started in 1956 by the Duke of Edinburgh as a small all-boys programme, it now involves 275,000 participants.

Three levels

There are Bronze, Silver, and Gold levels, each more challenging with unique goals.

Four activity areas

Activities are grouped into Volunteering, Physical, Skills, and Expedition.

Volunteering

Volunteering involves helping communities, for example at animal shelters or charity shops, typically over several months.

Physical

Physical focuses on fitness or sport, such as achieving a certification in parachuting or dancing.

Skills

Skills covers courses like jewellery making, first aid, or cookery to build practical talents.

Expedition

Expedition requires planning and completing an adventurous trip, often with teamwork and perseverance.

Timeframe

The programme can take 3 months to 3 years, depending on level and chosen activities.
