En el oído humano, se percibe dentro de un rango aproximado de 20 a 16.000 ciclos por segundo.

A mayor frecuencia, el sonido tiende a ser más agudo; a menor, más grave.

Se asocia con Hz y la rapidez de las variaciones de presión.
