Setting the Scene

On the morning of 26 December, a sunny day on Ko Phi Phi Don Island, Thailand, contrasted with London's typical weather.

Arrival at the Beach

After breakfast, the narrator headed to the beach while parents sunbathed and he dashed into crystal clear water.

The Sudden Alarm

A roar shattered the calm as the water vanished beneath the narrator’s feet and screams erupted around him.

The Enormous Wave

A massive wave charged toward him, prompting his mum to shout, ‘Mark, run!’ before everything engulfed him.

Underwater Struggle

He was dragged under, fighting to breathe and reach the surface as the force of the water pressed him down.

A Lifesaving Hand

Suddenly, a hand appeared, pulling him up and into the air. He gasped, scanning for safety amid chaos.

The Palm Tree Rescue

He opened his eyes to find himself in a palm tree, rescued by a Thai man while others ran in panic nearby.

Helicopter Aid

From afar, a helicopter appeared. The pilot landed and rescued the stranded people, offering a glimmer of hope.

Safe on the Hills

Half an hour later, they were safe in the hills, where the crowd grew and relief mixed with fear.

Reflection and Gratitude

The narrator felt relief and loneliness fade into gratitude, while pity for locals who lost homes lingered after the ordeal.
