Possessive Pronouns in TurkishOnline version

Turkish possessive pronouns lesson.

1

Introduction to iyelik zamirleri

In Turkish, iyelik zamirleri mean ownership. They include possessive pronouns like benim, senin, onun, bizim, sizin, onların. They show who owns something.

2

Basic idea

Turkish ownership often uses possessive pronouns before or after nouns. The possessive noun form agrees with the owner, not the thing owned.

3

First person singular

Benim means 'my'. Example: Benim arabam = my car. The owner is me, attached to the noun.

4

Second person singular

Senin means 'your' (informal). Example: Senin evin = your house. Ownership shows who possesses.

5

Third person singular

Onun means 'his' or 'her/its'. Example: Onun kitabı = his/her/its book. Context clarifies gender and thing.

6

First person plural

Bizim means 'our'. Example: Bizim öğretmenimiz = our teacher. Indicates collective ownership.

7

Second person plural

Sizin means 'your' (plural). Example: Sizin evleriniz = your (plural) houses. Respect this form for groups.

8

Third person plural

Onlarin or onların means 'their'. Example: Onların arabalari = their cars. Voice depends on context.

9

Common mistakes

Don't confuse possessive pronouns with possessive adjectives. In Turkish, suffixes attach to the noun, while pronouns stand alone as owners.
