Grundregeln – vokalens längd

Huvudregeln: Om vokalen låter lång är det ingen dubbelteckning i efterföljande konsonant.

Exempel: val, hög, tal.

Kort vokal → dubbel konsonant

Om vokalen låter kort ska man dubbelteckna konsonanten som följer.

Exempel: vall, högg, tall.

Undantag – ord med dom

Undantag: ord som innefattar dom (t.ex. domare).

Två olika konsonantljud

När en kort vokal följs av två olika konsonantljud skrivs en bokstav för varje konsonant.

Exempel: helst, hälsa, fisk.

Bevar dubbelteckning i böjningsformer

Dubbelteckningen behålls i böjningsformer.

Exempel: bygga → byggde → byggt.

Sammansatta ord – stil

Sammansatta ord stavas som de består av.

Exempel: ljus + stake = ljusstake.

Undantag – tre likadana konsonanter

När sammansatta ord skulle ge tre likadana konsonanter i rad, tas en bort.

Exempel: tilllägg, äggula.

Lång vokalljud → enkel konsonant

Sammanfattning: lång vokal → enkel konsonant; kort vokal → dubbel konsonant.

Exempel: baka vs backa, vas vs vass, våg vs våg.

Specifika konsonanter – l, n, r

Dubbelteckning före l, n och r när vokalen är kort.

Exempel: hellre, lyssnar, ugglA.

Specifika konsonanter – m och ck

m dubblas aldrig före annan konsonant eller i slutet av ord; föreckes som hem, kam, men undantag lamm.

När ett k-ljud kommer efter en kort vokal dubblas k till ck (inte kk).

Exempel: lycklig, tack.
