1

Slide 1: What -ed does in English

The suffix -ed marks the simple past for regular verbs. Its pronunciation changes depending on the final sound of the verb base.
2

Slide 2: Pronounce as /ɪd/

If the verb ends with /t/ or /d/ sounds, add an extra syllable sounded as /ɪd/. Examples: started -> /ˈstɑːtɪd/, ended -> /ˈɛndɪd/.
3

Slide 3: Pronounce as /t/

When the base ends with a voiceless sound (like /p, k, s, ʃ, tʃ, f/), -ed is /t/. Examples: walked, talked, jumped, watched.
4

Slide 4: Pronounce as /d/

When the base ends with a voiced sound (any vocalic or voiced consonant), -ed is /d/. Examples: played, called, moved, loved.
5

Slide 5: Spelling vs. sound

The same -ed spelling can be /ɪd/, /t/, or /d/. Look at the final sound of the verb to choose the pronunciation.
