I stand at the end, quiet as a spell, and I give the vowel before me a longer sound. What am I?

Hints

I'm called the magic e, and I often makes the vowel before me say its name.

Removing me can change 'bit' to 'bite'.

I'm found at the end of many short-for-phonics words.
