Emergency or Not? Making the Right Money Decisions

Not all savings are the same

  • Some are used for unexpected expenses
  • Some are used for planned expenses
  • Some are used for optional expenses

Knowing the difference helps you decide when to use your savings and which type to use

2

When to Use an Emergency Fund

There are only 3 reasons when an emergency fund should be used:

  • Unexpected expense
  • Necessary expense
  • Urgent expense

Examples:

  • Car breaks down on a road trip
  • Trip to the E.R. after a broken bone
  • Fired/let go from a job
3

When to Use a Sinking Fund

There are several reasons a sinking fund might be used:

  • Expected expense
  • Goals
  • Not urgent

Examples:

  • Family vacation
  • New car
  • Phone repair for a cracked screen
4

Where to Keep These Savings

These funds can be stored in either a traditional savings account, a HYSA, or a combination of both. Here are a few strategies:

Emergency Fund

  • If you have more than $1,000 in emergency fund savings, keep 75% in a HYSA and 25% in a traditional savings account (for quick access and convienience).
  • If you have less than $1,000, keep it all in a traditional savings account

Sinking Fund

  • If you need frequent or quick access to your savings, keep it in a traditional account
  • If the planned expense or goal is more than a few months away or you want to let your money sit and grow, keep it in a HYSA
5

Key Takeaway

  • Not EVERY expense is an emergency
  • PLAN ahead with sinking funds
  • PROTECT yourself with emergency funds
  • Let the funds GROW over time in a HYSA
