Slide 1: What is Addition?

Addition is combining two or more numbers to find their total. It answers questions like, “How many in all?”

Slide 2: The Plus Sign

The plus sign (+) tells us to combine quantities. When we see 3 + 5, we add the numbers together.

Slide 3: Counting Up

When adding, start with the smaller number and count up to reach the total. This is a simple strategy for small numbers.

Use a number line to hop forward from the first addend to reach the sum. Each jump adds one.

Slide 5: Regrouping (Carrying)

For larger sums, regroup by carrying tens to the next column. This keeps digits in place-value order.

Key ideas: commutativity (a + b = b + a) and associativity ((a + b) + c = a + (b + c)).

Any number plus zero remains unchanged. 7 + 0 = 7. Zeros don’t change the total.
