What is a Fraction?

A fraction represents a part of a whole. The top number (numerator) shows how many parts we have, while the bottom (denominator) shows how many parts make a whole.

Equivalent Fractions

Two fractions are equivalent when they represent the same value. Multiply or divide both numerator and denominator by the same number to create equal fractions.

Simplifying

Simplifying reduces a fraction to its smallest form. Divide numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor (GCD) until no larger common divisor exists.

Adding with Same Denominator

To add fractions with a common denominator, simply add the numerators and keep the denominator. Example: 1/6 + 2/6 = 3/6.

Adding with Different Denominators

Find a common denominator (often the least common multiple). Convert each fraction, then add. Finally, simplify if possible.

Subtracting

Subtract fractions with the same denominator by subtracting numerators. If denominators differ, convert to a common denominator first.

Multiplication

Multiply numerators together and denominators together. For mixed numbers, convert to improper fractions first.

Division

Dividing by a fraction means multiplying by its reciprocal. Flip the second fraction and multiply. Example: 3/4 ÷ 2/5 = 3/4 × 5/2.

Fractions to Decimals

Convert by dividing numerator by denominator. Fractions can be expressed as decimals or percentages to compare values easily.
