Slide 1: What are ordinal numbers?

Ordinal numbers order or rank things. They tell position, like first, second, or third, rather than quantity.

Slide 2: Basic ordinal forms

The most common forms are first, second, third, and then fourth, fifth, etc. These show order, not amount.

Slide 3: Forming ordinals (general rule)

For many numbers, add -th to the cardinals: fourth, fifth, sixth. Irregulars exist for 1st–3rd and some teens.

Slide 4: Irregular ordinals

Key irregulars: first, second, third. The rest follow the general rule, but twelfth, twentieth, etc., have unique forms.

Slide 5: Spelling quirks

Endings vary: -st (1st), -nd (2nd), -rd (3rd), -th otherwise. Watch for eleventh, twelfth.

Slide 6: Common uses (dates and rankings)

Use ordinals for dates: June 5th. For rankings: first place, second in a contest.

We describe positions in lines, floors, or lists: third row, fourth floor, or fifth item.
