Definición

Un arco es una porción de la circunferencia entre dos puntos. Se mide por su ángulo central o por su longitud.

Arco menor

El arco menor es la distancia más corta entre dos puntos sobre la circunferencia y mide menos de 180 grados.

Arco mayor

El arco mayor es la parte restante de la circunferencia entre dos puntos y mide más de 180 grados.

Relación con el ángulo central

La medida de un arco coincide con el ángulo central subtendido por ese arco; 360 grados corresponden a toda la circunferencia.

Marcando arcos

Con dos puntos A y B en la circunferencia, existen dos arcos: uno menor y uno mayor. Juntos completan 360 grados.

Propiedades

El arco mayor mide 360 menos la medida del arco menor. Si el menor es 100°, el mayor es 260°.

Formato de medida

Los arcos pueden expresarse en grados o en longitud de arco basada en la circunferencia y su radio.

Ejemplo práctico

En una circunferencia de 10 cm de radio, un arco menor de 60° tiene longitud aproximadamente 1/6 de la circunferencia.

Imagina tres puntos A, B y C. El arco AB menor atraviesa el interior chiquito, el mayor AB recorre casi toda la circunferencia.

Recapitulación

Recuerda: menor < 180°, mayor > 180°. La suma de ambos arcos entre dos puntos es 360°.
