Welcome! In this mini-lesson, we’ll cover time expressions, basic dates, the numbers 11–20, and simple pronouns for beginners.

Slide 6: Numbers 11–15

  1. Counting 11–15:
  2. onze, eleven
  3. douze, twelve
  4. treize, thirteen
  5. quatorze, fourteen
  6. quinze.fifteen
  7. Practice saying them aloud to build fluency and confidence.

Slide 7: Numbers 16–20

  1. Continuing:
  2. seize,
  3. dix-sept,
  4. dix-huit,
  5. dix-neuf,
  6. vingt.
  7. Note hyphenation for numbers 17–19.

Slide 2: Time Basics

French time is often built with the verb être and expressions like il est for it is. Remember heure means hour, and minute means minute.

Slide 3: Saying the Hour

To say the hour, use il est + hour numbers. Example: Il est deux heures = It is two o’clock.

  1. For minutes, say:
  2. et + minutes.
  3. Il est deux heures et demie = two thirty.
  4. Use moins for countdown times.
  5. Le quart= the quarter
  6. Il est deux heures moins le quart = it is a quarter to two

  1. Janvier = January
  2. Février = February
  3. Mars = March
  4. Avril = April
  5. Mai = May
  6. Juin = June
  7. Juillet = July
  8. Août = August
  9. Septembre = September
  10. Octobre = October

Dates: day + month + year. Example: 12 janvier 2024. Months are capitalized in titles but not in sentences.

  1. Subject pronouns:
  2. je= I
  3. , tu,=you (1)
  4. il/elle,= he/she
  5. nous= we
  6. , vous, = you ( plural)
  7. ils/elles. = they
  8. Use these to form simple sentences.
  9. Je mange du chocolat =I eat chocolate
  10. Il aime les chiens = he likes dogs
  11. Nous jouons au football = we play football
  12. Vous avez faims ? = are you( plural or formal ) hungry?
  13. Elles son fatiguées = they(feminine) are tired

Create two sentences: one about time, one about dates. Include a number 11–20 and a pronoun. Share your examples for feedback.
