Do vs Does: present simple usage.

1

Slide 1: What are do and does?

Do and does are auxiliary verbs used to form questions and negatives in the present simple. They agree with the subject.

2

Slide 2: Do with I/you/we/they

We use do with I, you, we, and they. Example: Do you like coffee? / They do not play soccer.

3

Slide 3: Does with he/she/it

We use does with he, she, and it. Example: Does he work on weekends? / She does not swim.

4

Slide 4: Forming questions (present)

To form questions, place do or does at the beginning: Do you live here? Does she drive to work?

5

Slide 5: Negative sentences

Negatives use not after do/does: You do not (don’t) like sushi. He does not (doesn’t) study abroad.

6

Slide 6: Short answers

Short answers repeat the auxiliary: Do you sing? Yes, I do. Does she travel? No, she doesn’t.

7

Slide 7: Singular subject rule

With third person singular (he, she, it), use does. For others, use do. No change to main verb.

8

Slide 8: Common mistakes

A common error is using do/does with wrong subjects, or forgetting not in negatives. Check subject-auxiliary agreement.

9

Slide 9: Quick practice

Fill the blanks: ___ you like apples? She ___ go to the gym. They not ___ speak French.

10

Slide 10: Recap

Do for I/you/we/they; does for he/she/it. Use for questions and negatives; watch agreement and short answers.
