Di dapur rumah, garam dapur sering digunakan sebagai penyedap makanan. Garam tersebut tersusun dari natrium (Na) dan klorin (Cl) yang awalnya merupakan atom netral. Natrium memiliki satu elektron valensi yang mudah dilepaskan, sedangkan klorin membutuhkan satu elektron agar kulit terluarnya menjadi stabil. Ketika kedua atom berinteraksi, elektron dari atom natrium berpindah ke atom klorin sehingga terbentuk ion Na⁺ dan Cl⁻. Gaya tarik-menarik antara ion bermuatan berbeda inilah yang menyebabkan terbentuknya senyawa natrium klorida (NaCl).
