Step 1: Each student holds 10 papers, each representing a possible planet in the making—your personal set of worlds in the vast universe.

Step 2: Embrace the room’s space

Step 2: See the room as space junk. Only a small fraction of those worlds could be in the Goldilocks Zone.

Step 3: The Habitability Filter

Step 3: Choose one paper. Leave the other 9 on your desk; only about 1 in 10 planets may be habitable.

Step 4: Observe the hopefuls

Step 4: Look around. The remaining papers show the tiny chance of life-supporting worlds.

Step 5: The Origin of Life

Step 5: If you still hold papers, flip a coin: Heads—some survive; Tails—half exit and rip their papers.

Step 6: The Intelligence Filter

Step 6 : For survivors, rip up papers if your name contains an "a"; tech-advancing civilizations are filtered out.

Step 7: The Tech Path

Step 7: Those with remaining papers must show technological progress to communicate across space.

Step 9: Write a number for how long your civilization lasts—years of wars, climate, or catastrophe.

Step 9: Did you survive?

If you wrote down numbers like 100 or 1,000 years, think about this: the universe is 13 billion years old. It’s very likely that by the time your radio signal reaches us, you’ll already be ashes.

We started with hundreds of potential worlds and ended up with just a few.
