Slide 1: What are non-venereal treponemes?

Non-venereal treponemes are bacteria from the genus Treponema that cause infections spread through non-sexual contact or close skin contact, not via sexual activity.

2

Slide 2: Main diseases

The three principal diseases are yaws (tropical skin sores), bejel or endemic syphilis (mucous membrane lesions), and pinta (pigmentary skin changes).

3

Slide 3: Causative organisms

Caused by T. pallidum subsp pertenue (yaws), T. pallidum subsp endemicum (bejel), and T. carateum (pinta).

4

Slide 4: Transmission

Transmission occurs through non-sexual skin-to-skin contact, contaminated objects, and, in some cases, through sharing utensils or close living conditions.

5

Slide 5: Yaws features

Yaws presents as chronic tropical skin and bone lesions, typically in children, with possible secondary bacterial infection.

6

Slide 6: Pinta features

Pinta causes depigmented skin lesions that may scar after healing, primarily affecting the skin and mucosal areas.

7

Slide 7: Bejel features

Bejel causes mucous membrane lesions, gumma formation, and shallow ulcers, often with chronic, slowly progressive disease.

8

Slide 8: Diagnosis

Diagnosis relies on serologic tests (VDRL/RPR, treponemal tests) and, when available, PCR or dark-field microscopy. Consider epidemiology.

9

Slide 9: Treatment

Treatment typically uses penicillin or doxycycline for nonpregnant patients; regimens depend on age, pregnancy, and disease severity.

10

Slide 10: Prevention & public health

Prevention emphasizes early detection, mass treatment campaigns, good hygiene, and crowded-area improvements; vaccines are not yet available.
