1

Slide 1: What is the past perfect?

The past perfect describes an action completed before another past moment. It uses had plus the past participle of the verb.

2

Slide 2: Forming the tense

Form: subject + had + past participle. Examples: She had finished, They had left.

3

Slide 3: When to use it (before another past event)

Use it to show which action happened first in the past, especially when another past event is mentioned later.

4

Slide 4: Time expressions

Common clues: by the time, before, already, yet in the past.

5

Slide 5: Positive sentence examples

She had completed the assignment before the meeting started. They had never seen the ocean before that trip.

6

Slide 6: Negative sentence examples

He hadn't finished the report when the boss called. We hadn't eaten by the time they arrived.

7

Slide 7: Question form

Question: Had you finished the homework before class? Answer: Yes, I had.

8

Slide 8: Contractions and informal use

In conversation: I'd had breakfast before leaving. She'd had already read the email.

9

Slide 9: Common mistakes

Avoid mixing with simple past. Don’t say "I had go"; correct form is had gone.

10

Slide 10: Quick practice

Replace the verbs with the past perfect where appropriate: Before the movie started, they (eat) popcorn. They had eaten popcorn before the movie started.
