Els ecosistemes combinen elements abiòtics (medi, com deserts), bìotics (flor i fauna) i antròpics (activitats humanes).

Els deserts presents temperatures extremes i plujes rares. Exemple: el desert del Sàhara.

Les selves són caloroses i molt humides, amb vegetació dense. Exemple: la selva amazònica.

Les glaceres són fredes gairebé tot l'any. Exemple: Groenlàndia.

Les muntanyes elevades, com l'Himàlaia, tenen valls separades per relleu abrupt.

Conseqüències: desforestació, erosió, esgotament de l'aigua i pèrdua de biodiversitat.
