Respiratory System

The respiratory system is the biological network of organs and tissues that allows you to breathe. Its primary function is to bring oxygen into your body which your cells need to produce energy and to expel carbon dioxide, which is a waste product of that energy production.

Structure

The respiratory system includes the nose, mouth, pharynx, larynx, trachea, and lungs. The organs of the respiratory system form a continuous passage from our nose and mouth to our lungs. This passage is called the respiratory tract, through which air flows into and out of the body.

Nose and Mouth

These are the primary entry points. The nasal cavity is especially important because it warms, moistens, and filters the incoming air using tiny hairs and mucus to trap dust and particles.

Pharynx (Throat)

A shared passageway that carries both air toward the lungs and food toward the stomach.

Larynx (Voice Box)

Located just below the pharynx, this structure contains your vocal cords. It also features the epiglottis, a small flap of tissue that folds over the windpipe when you swallow to prevent food from entering your lungs.

Trachea (Windpipe)

A rigid, cartilage-ringed tube that acts as the main highway for air traveling down into your chest.

Bronchi and Bronchioles

At its base, the trachea splits into two large tubes called the right and left bronchi, each leading to a lung. Inside the lungs, these bronchi branch out into progressively smaller tubes called bronchioles, resembling an upside-down tree.

Alveoli

At the very ends of the smallest bronchioles are clusters of microscopic, balloon-like air sacs known as alveoli.

Air enters and gas exchange

Air enters the respiratory system through the nose or mouth, and then travels down the trachea, bronchi, and into the alveoli in the lungs, where gas exchange takes place.

The diaphragm

It is a dome-shaped muscle that lies under the lungs. When we breathe in, the diaphragm contracts and moves downward. This action increases the space inside the thoracic cavity and pulls air into the lungs. When we breathe out, the diaphragm relaxes and moves upwards into the thoracic cavity. This causes air to move out of the lungs and the thorax returns to its original size.

The ribs

They are the bony framework of the thoracic cavity. They have intercostal muscles that also help in the expansion and contraction of the thoracic cavity. They protect the lungs and heart.
