Slide 1 – What is Present Continuous?

The present continuous describes actions happening now or around now. It uses a form of to be + verb-ing. Example: I am studying right now.

2

Slide 2 – Forming the tense

Subject + am/is/are + verb-ing. I am reading, you are cooking, they are playing. Negative: I am not eating; contraction: I’m not eating.

3

Slide 3 – Common uses

Used for actions happening at the moment, temporary actions, and ongoing situations around now. Like: She is staying with us this week.

4

Slide 4 – Time expressions

Key clues include now, at the moment, currently, today, this week, and these days. They signal ongoing activity.

5

Slide 5 – Positive examples

Examples: I am walking to school. They are watching a movie. He is learning Spanish this month.

6

Slide 6 – Negative forms

Negative structure: subject + am/is/are + not + verb-ing. Contractions: I’m not eating; He isn’t running; They aren’t sleeping.

7

Slide 7 – Questions

Question form: Am/Is/Are + subject + verb-ing? Answers can be short: Yes, I am. No, I’m not.

8

Slide 8 – Spelling tips

Keep the base verb, add -ing. If ends with silent e, drop e (make → making). Double final consonant for short, stressed syllables (run → running).

9

Slide 9 – Common mistakes

Don’t use simple present for ongoing actions. Don’t forget to use to be correctly. Watch spelling: run → running, have → having.

10

Slide 10 – Quick practice

Fill in the blanks: ‘She ____ (read) a book now.’ Answer: is reading. Create two sentences with contractions: I am not working; They aren’t studying.
