Slide 1 — How to break into syllables

Welcome! Today we learn to read simple words by syllables. We’ll clap or count each beat: one syllable, two syllables, and more. This helps pronunciation and memory.

Tip: say the word slowly, then split it into parts. Practice with a partner or a mirror to see your mouth move.

Slide 2 — banana (ba-na-na)

Word: banana. Pronounce as ba-na-na. It has three syllables: /ba/ /na/ /na/.

Example: The banana is yellow. I eat a banana for a snack.

Clap: clap three times: ba - na - na.

Slide 3 — apple (ap-ple)

Word: apple. Pronounce as ap-ple. Two syllables: /ap/ /ple/.

Example: I like a red apple. An apple a day helps you stay healthy.

Clap: clap twice: ap - ple.

Slide 4 — water (wa-ter)

Word: water. Pronounce as wa-ter. Two syllables: /wa/ /ter/.

Example: I drink water after playing. Water keeps me energized.

Tip: Think of waves: wa then ter.

Word: cookie. Pronounce as cook-ie. Two syllables: /cook/ /ie/.

Example: The cookie is sweet. I share a cookie with a friend.

Clap: cook - ie.

Slide 6 — pencil (pen-cil)

Word: pencil. Pronounce as pen-cil. Two syllables: /pen/ /cil/.

Example: I draw with a pencil. A pencil helps me write and sketch.

Clap: pen - cil.

Slide 7 — rabbit (rab-bit)

Word: rabbit. Pronounce as rab-bit. Two syllables: /rab/ /bit/.

Example: The rabbit hops in the garden. Rabbits like carrots.

Practice: say it slowly, then quickly: rab-bit.

Slide 8 — people (peo-ple)

Word: people. Pronounce as peo-ple. Two syllables: /peo/ /ple/.

Example: People in the park smile and talk. We listen to people who speak softly.

Tip: Split as peo and ple.

Slide 9 — bicycle (bi-cy-cle)

Word: bicycle. Pronounce as bi-cy-cle. Three syllables: /bi/ /cy/ /cle/.

Example: A bicycle has two wheels. I ride a bicycle on sunny days.

Clap: bi - cy - cle.

Slide 10 — review and practice

Let’s review the words learned: banana, apple, water, cookie, pencil, rabbit, people, bicycle. Say each word aloud, syllables first, then whole word.

Practice with a partner: one person says the word, the other claps the syllables and repeats the word.
