Digestive journey across the gut

by Cyrene Medina
1

Overview

The human digestive system breaks down food into nutrients the body can use. It includes organs, enzymes, and coordinated actions that process meals.

2

Mouth

Digestion begins in the mouth. Teeth chew, saliva softens, and enzymes start breaking carbohydrates. Swallowed food becomes a bolus ready for the esophagus.

3

Esophagus

The esophagus transports food via peristaltic waves. A one-way sphincter at the stomach prevents reflux, guiding the bolus downward through smooth muscle contractions.

4

Stomach

The stomach stores and churns food, mixing it with acid and enzymes. A protective lining forms chyme, a semi-liquid mass ready for small intestine.

5

Small Intestine

The small intestine absorbs most nutrients. Pancreatic enzymes and bile from the liver break down fats, proteins, and carbs as chyme spreads across a large surface.

6

Liver

The liver produces bile, helps digest fats, detoxifies chemicals, stores vitamins, and processes nutrients absorbed from the small intestine.

7

Pancreas

The pancreas releases digestive enzymes and bicarbonate into the small intestine, neutralizing stomach acid and aiding breakdown of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates.

8

Large Intestine

The large intestine absorbs water and electrolytes. Beneficial gut bacteria ferment remaining material, forming stool and synthesizing helpful vitamins.

9

Digestive Processes

Key processes include mechanical digestion, chemical digestion, absorption, and elimination. Hormones control enzyme release to match dietary needs.

10

Healthy Habits

Maintain a balanced diet rich in fiber, stay hydrated, exercise, and limit processed foods. Regular meals support smooth digestion and gut health.
