Plant power: how photosynthesis works

by Solen Ako
1

Slide 1 – What is photosynthesis?

Photosynthesis is the process by which plants, algae, and some bacteria convert light energy into chemical energy. They use light, water, and carbon dioxide to produce glucose and oxygen.

2

Slide 2 – Where does it occur?

Photosynthesis takes place mainly in chloroplasts, specialized plant cell organelles containing chlorophyll, the green pigment that captures light energy during the reaction.

3

Slide 3 – The light reactions

In the light reactions, light energy drives the splitting of water, releasing oxygen. Energy carriers ATP and NADPH are produced to power the next stage.

4

Slide 4 – The Calvin cycle

Also called the dark reactions, the Calvin cycle uses ATP and NADPH to convert carbon dioxide into glucose, a usable chemical energy source for the plant.

5

Slide 5 – Inputs

Key inputs are light, water, and carbon dioxide. Sufficient light and water promote efficient energy capture and glucose synthesis.

6

Slide 6 – Outputs

The main outputs are glucose, which fuels growth, and oxygen, which is released into the atmosphere as a byproduct.

7

Slide 7 – Why it matters

Photosynthesis drives food chains, helps regulate atmospheric CO2, and supplies the oxygen we breathe. It sustains almost all life on Earth.

8

Slide 8 – Factors affecting rate

Rate depends on light intensity, temperature, carbon dioxide concentration, and water availability. Optimal conditions maximize production while stress slows it down.

9

Slide 9 – Real-world applications

Understanding photosynthesis improves crop yields, informs greenhouse design, and underpins biofuel research and sustainable energy strategies.

10

Slide 10 – Quick recap

Photosynthesis converts light, water, and CO2 into glucose and O2. It happens in chloroplasts, via light reactions and the Calvin cycle. Essential for life.
