Introducción

Las plantas se reproducen para crear nuevas plantas. Existen dos grandes formas: reproducción sexual y reproducción asexual.

Reproducción sexual

La reproducción sexual implica flores, semillas y frutos. Las plantas con flores se polinizan para formar semillas que pueden crecer en nuevas plantas.

Polinización

La polinización puede realizarla el viento, insectos o agua. Así el polen llega a la flor y se forma la semilla.

Semillas y crecimiento

Después de la floración, las semillas viajan y pueden crecer si tienen tierra, agua y luz.

Reproducción asexual

La reproducción asexual no usa semillas. Las plantas se multiplican por partes del cuerpo: tallos, raíces o hojas.

Esquejes

Con cortes de tallos o hojas, algunas plantas forman raíces y se convierten en plantas nuevas.

Tubérculos y bulbos

Las plantas pueden reproducirse por tubérculos (p. ej., papa) o bulbos (ajo, cebolla).

Rizomas y estolones

Algunas plantas generan rizomas (tallos subterráneos) o estolones que dan nuevas plantas.

Ejemplos simples

Ejemplos: maíz y frijol se reproducen por semillas; menta puede propagarse por esquejes.
