The digestive system turns food into usable energy. It breaks down meals, absorbs nutrients, and removes waste from the body. Think of it as a long, busy tube inside you.

Slide 2: The mouth and saliva

Food enters the mouth, where teeth chew to break it apart. Saliva softens and starts digestion, making swallowing easier and helping enzymes begin breaking down starches.

Slide 3: The esophagus and peristalsis

The esophagus moves food down using wave-like contractions called peristalsis. Muscular squeezing pushes the bolus toward the stomach with rhythm and force.

The stomach mixes food with stomach acid and enzymes. This turns it into a semi-liquid substance called chyme, which then moves into the small intestine for absorption.

The small intestine absorbs nutrients through tiny finger-like structures called villi. Nutrients pass into the bloodstream to fuel your body, while leftovers move on.
