Overview

The circulatory system carries blood, nutrients and oxygen throughout the body. It includes the heart, blood vessels and blood itself, forming a closed loop.

Heart: Role

The heart powers circulation by contracting rhythmically, pushing blood to lungs for oxygen and to the rest of the body for delivery of nutrients.

Heart Chambers

The heart has four chambers: two atria receive blood, two ventricles pump blood out. Atria are on top, ventricles on the bottom.

Heart Valves

Valves ensure one-way blood flow: the atrioventricular valves separate atria from ventricles, and the semilunar valves control exits to arteries.

Right Side

The right atrium and right ventricle handle deoxygenated blood, sending it to the lungs via the pulmonary artery for gas exchange.

Left Side

The left atrium and left ventricle receive oxygenated blood from the lungs and pump it to the body through the aorta.

Blood Vessels

Arteries carry blood away from the heart; veins return blood to the heart; capillaries enable exchange between blood and tissues.

Blood Components

Blood contains red cells, white cells, platelets and plasma. Red cells transport oxygen; white cells defend; platelets aid clotting.

Pulmonary Circulation

Pulmonary circulation carries blood from the right heart to the lungs and back, enabling oxygen uptake and carbon dioxide removal.

Systemic Circulation

Systemic circulation delivers oxygen-rich blood from the left heart to tissues and returns deoxygenated blood to the right heart.
