Past tense practice

1

Slide 1: What is the Simple Past?

The simple past describes actions that started and finished in the past. Use it for completed events yesterday, last week, or moments ago.
2

Slide 2: Formation

Formation: Subject + verb in past form. Regular verbs add -ed (walked, played). Irregular verbs change entirely (went, bought, came).
3

Slide 3: Negative form

Negative: use did not + base form. I did not walk yesterday. She did not go to the party.
4

Slide 4: Question form

Questions with did start the sentence: Did you walk? Did she go to work?
5

Slide 5: Time expressions

Common time markers: yesterday, last week, in 1999, when I was a child. They signal completed past actions.
6

Slide 6: Irregular verbs (brief)

Note that many verbs are irregular and must be memorized. Examples: go went, buy bought, take took, see saw, eat ate, make made.
7

Slide 7: Short answers

Short answers: Did you walk yesterday? Yes, I did. No, I didn’t. In questions, use short replies with did and the subject.
8

Slide 8: Common mistakes

Errors to avoid: mixing present tense with past, adding -ed to irregulars, forgetting did in questions, using was/were for actions.
9

Slide 9: Practice time

Practice: Fill the blanks with the correct past form. Example: I _____ to the cinema yesterday. She _____ two apples last week.
10

Slide 10: Quick recap

Remember: use simple past for finished actions, with did for negatives and questions, and watch irregular verbs.
