Sonnet fundamentals: a 14-line poem with a strict rhythm and a defined rhyme scheme. Used to explore love, nature, and time.

Today we focus on rhyme and meter—the beating heart of the form.

Slide 2: What is Rhyme?

Rhyme is the repetition of identical sounds at the ends of lines. It creates harmony and musicality in poetry.

In sonnets, rhymes bind the lines into a cohesive whole.

Slide 3: Rhyme Schemes in Sonnets

Most common form: Shakespearean ABAB CDCD EFEF GG. The final couplet often delivers a twist or summary.

Other forms include Petrarchan ABBA ABBA CDE CDE.

Slide 4: Perfect vs Slant Rhymes

Perfect rhyme: exact sounds (night/bright).

Slant rhyme: close, but not exact (worm/swarm). Slant rhymes can add subtle tension.

Meter is the pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables. It gives poetry its beat and pace.

In English poetry, common meters include iambic, trochaic, and anapestic patterns.

Iambic pentameter is the most famous meter in English verse. It has five iambs per line: unstressed, stressed repeated.

Example rhythm: da-DUM da-DUM da-DUM da-DUM da-DUM.

Scansion marks stressed syllables with a ˈ or /. Unstressed with ˘ or U. Example line is scanned to reveal its rhythm.

Line example: Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?

Scan: ˘ ˈ ˘ ˈ ˘ ˈ ˘ ˈ ˘ ˈ. Five iambs, fits iambic pentameter.

Petrarchan often uses Italian octave with ABBA ABBA + CDE CDE. Shakespearean uses the English quatrains with a final couplet in iambic pentameter.

Write a four-line mini-sonnet in iambic pentameter. Use an ABAB rhyme, or try an ending couplet. Check rhythm and rhyme: read aloud, adjust stressed syllables.
