Wings of MetamorphosisOnline version

Wings, metamorphosis, and more

by John Paul Gelsano
1

Born small and slow on a leaf, I dream of skies beyond the breeze; I shed my shell, spin a resting stage, and emerge with colors that tease. What am I?

Hints

I drink nectar with a long tongue and flap bright wings to fly.

I enter a chrysalis stage where I transform while staying still.

I begin life as a tiny crawler that looks nothing like a flyer.

2

I play a tiny, buzzing song right beside your ear, A pesky little summer guest that people dread to hear. I leave behind an itchy bump and fly away so quick—One tiny slap from you is all it takes to make me stick.

3

I start my life without any legs, swimming in a pond, Then grow four feet and leap around the lily pads beyond. I catch my dinner with a tongue that's sticky, long, and green, And sing a noisy "ribbit" song when night falls on the scene.

4

I wake up early in the morning with a loud, proud shout, I peck around the dusty yard and scratch the dirt about. I give you tasty eggs to eat, though I can barely fly, And when I walk my feathered head bobs back and forth, oh my!

5

I walk on giant, stomping feet and wear a coat of gray, I carry my own drinking straw to wash the dust away. My ears are big as flapping fans, my tusks are bright and white, I never forget a friendly face—I’m quite a massive sight!

6

I sit up in the tallest tree and keep a watchful eye, I hunt for mice in pitch-black night without a sound or sigh. I turn my head almost around, my eyes are big and bright, I ask a simple question, "Who?" before I take to flight.
