Slide 1 — What is velocity?

Velocity is how fast something moves and the direction it travels. It combines speed with a sense of where it’s headed.

Slide 2 — Speed vs. velocity

Speed tells how fast, but not where. Velocity tells both how fast and which way. A car’s velocity includes its path.

Slide 3 — Units of velocity

Common units are meters per second (m/s) or kilometers per hour (km/h). Choose units based on distance and time.

Slide 4 — Measuring velocity

To find velocity, divide the displacement (change in position) by the time taken. Velocity = displacement ÷ time.

A car travels 120 km north in 2 hours. Its velocity is 60 km/h toward the north.

Slide 6 — Direction matters

Velocity has direction. Moving east is a positive direction, while moving west is negative in some setups. Track both speed and direction.

Distance is how far you travel. Displacement is the straight-line from start to finish with direction.

Walking at 1.5 m/s, cycling at 6 m/s, or a ball thrown at 20 m/s all have velocity with direction. Think about both parts!
