El síndrome de Down no es una enfermedad. El efecto que la presencia de esta alteración produce en cada persona es muy variable. Lo que sí podemos afirmar es que una persona con síndrome de Down tendrá algún grado de discapacidad intelectual y mostrará algunas características típicas de este síndrome. Las personas con síndrome de Down muestran algunas características comunes pero cada individuo es singular, con una apariencia, personalidad y habilidades únicas.
