What is democracy?

What is democracy? 

Democracy is a form of government of the state where power is exercised by the people, through legitimate mechanisms of participation in political decision-making. Etymologically, the word democracy is found in the Greek "Δημοκρατία" (Democratía), and it is composed of the terms "δῆμος" (demonstrations), which can be translated as ' people ', and ' Κράτος ' (krátos), which means ' power '.

Universal suffrage

Universal suffrage 

The fundamental mechanism of citizen participation is universal, free, equal, direct and secret suffrage, through which it elects its leaders or representatives for a given period. The elections are carried out by the majority or proportional representation systems, or combination of both.

The greatest representative of citizens in a democracy is the one who wields the executive power, i.e. the President of the Government. However, other executive positions of regional or local rank, as well as legislative charges, are also democratically attributed by voting.

In this sense, democracy is also the government of the majorities, but without neglecting the rights of individuals or neglecting minorities.

As democracies are also designated the countries that have this form of government: "The Democracies of the World demand justice". Most democracies have a Magna Carta or supreme law as a guide for legislators and as a guarantee for citizens with the aim of asserting their rights and the action of the current government.

The term democracy is extended to the communities or groups of people where all the individuals participate in the decision making: "Here it is decided which television program we are going to see as in a democracy".

Taking into account, what was said by Plato and Aristotle, it is possible to consider as a democracy the government of the multitude or of the majority, values that are still reflected in modern democracies.
