Fue el segundo conflicto entre México y Francia, que comenzo por los reclamos de los franceses por suspencion de la deuda, cuando Benito Juarez estaba en el gobierno, y sigue con el establecimiento del Segundo Imperio Mexicano, sostenido por las tropas francesas, belgas y australiacas las cuales ocuparon el país entre 1862 y 1867.

Esta guerra es conocida tambien como "Guerra Franco Mexicana"
