Anteriormente, en<a href="http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mesopotamia" title="Mesopotamia" target="_blank">Mesopotamia</a> y el <a href="http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antiguo_Egipto" title="Antiguo Egipto" target="_blank">Antiguo Egipto</a> se conocían <a href="http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terna_pitag%C3%B3rica" title="Terna pitagórica" target="_blank">ternas de valores</a> que se correspondían con los lados de un triángulo rectángulo, y se utilizaban para resolver problemas referentes a los citados triángulos, tal como se indica en algunas tablillas y <a href="http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Papiro" title="Papiro" target="_blank">papiros</a>
