The war ended on November 11, 1918, with the signing of the Armistice of Compiègne. This was not a peace treaty but a temporary agreement to stop fighting. The armistice was followed by the Paris Peace Conference

Representatives from nearly thirty nations attended, but it was dominated by the "Big Four": U.S. President Woodrow Wilson, British Prime Minister David Lloyd George, French Prime Minister Georges Clemenceau, and Italian Prime Minister Vittorio Orlando.
