Business continuity planning does not prevent all disruptions, but it helps organisations prepare for, respond to, and recover from them effectively.

Business continuity (BC) includes disaster recovery (DR) as a key component. While DR focuses on IT recovery, BC ensures the entire organization can function during a disruption and covers other components such as people, processes, supply chain, and facilities.

Organisations should regularly update their Business Continuity Plans (BCPs), at least annually, not just after a major incident.

While big companies may have more resources, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are often more vulnerable to disruptions because they may lack backup systems, financial buffers, or alternative suppliers; so business continuity planning is also essential.

Every organisation should have unique business continuity strategies tailored to its industry, size, risks, and critical operations.

A BCP should be a living document that is regularly reviewed and updated in order to align with business changes, deal with emerging threats, and integrate lessons learned from disruptions.

While natural hazards like earthquakes, floods, and hurricanes can cause business disruptions, they are not the leading cause of business continuity incidents. Top causes of business continuity incidents are technology failures, cybersecurity incidents, and supply chain disruptions.

Business continuity is not just about technology and IT - it applies to all critical functions of an organization, including people, processes, facilities, and supply chains.

Business continuity planning is an ongoing process, not a one-time task. Organisations must continuously update, test, and improve their plans to stay prepared for evolving risks and business changes.

Insurance is not enough to ensure business continuity. While insurance provides financial protection after a disruption, it does not help a business maintain operations during the crisis.
