לסרטנים קשה יותר לפתוח צדפות בעלות קונכיה עבה מאשר צדפות בעלות קונכיה דקה, ולכן קשה להם יותר לאכול את הצדפות הללו.

צדפות כהות מאוד נטרפות יותר ע"י ציפורים, משום שקל להבחין בהן מלמעלה. גם צדפות בהירות מאוד בולטות על רקע קרקעית הים במבט מלמעלה.

צבעם של סרטני נהרות בהירים דומה מאוד לצבע הסלעים בקרקעית נחלים, ולכן טורפים מתקשים לאתר אותם. סרטני נהרות כהים מסווים את עצמם בצללים שיוצרים הסלעים בקרקעית נחלים. סרטני הנהרות בעלי פיגמנטציה בינונית מוסווים פחות בסביבתם.

באחד מאיי גלפגוס, היו אוכלוסיות של פרושים. לאחר תקופת בצורת חמורה, נותרו על האי רק זרעים בעלי קליפה עבה מאוד. מיני הפרושים להם מקור קטן מתו מרעב.

צפרדע שלה לשון ארוכה יחסית, מצליחה לצוד יותר זבובים.

בנישה מסוימת, זבובים קטנים נטרפים על ידי עכבישים, וזבובים גדולים נטרפים על ידי ציפורים, בעיקר על ידי נקרים.
